Historical Notes:
original silk 1860s day dress
Image courtesy The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This 1860s era day dress for an upper class lady/lady of wealth is based upon the extant gown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (shown left).

This extant gown is thought to be a wedding gown made of silk and cotton. It is of American provenance and dates to 1860.

The gown bodice is fitted closely at the waist and bust. The combination cap and wide bell- shaped sleeves slope far off the shoulder.

This gown is a beautiful example of the wide shoulder, narrow waist, wide skirt silhouette so popular during this period.
