Rounding out our month long celebration of female Rounding out our month long celebration of female #worldchangers, we move into the present with a lady who needs no introduction. From enriching the lives of millions of children through her foundation The Imagination Library which provides every child with a book monthly for the first five years of their life to helping fund the development of COVID vaccinations, forget the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Dolly deserves the Nobel Prize! A true inspiration for women all around the world. #belikedolly #whatwoulddollydo #iwillalwaysloveyou #dollyparton #bighairdontcare #tennesseewomen #influencialwomen #countryfolk #appalachia #womenshistorymonth #maggiemayfashions #calicoball
Suffragette Abby Crawford Milton was not content b Suffragette Abby Crawford Milton was not content being a kept woman at the dawn of the 20th century. Instead, she enrolled at The Chattanooga College of Law where she earned her jurisprudence degree. Rather than practice, she instead traveled into small towns across Tennessee advocating for women’s right to vote. Believing education was the key to relieving the plight of women, she was successful in gaining the trust of Tennessee’s rural communities. On August 18, 1920 Tennessee made history by voting to ratify the 19th Amendment- thus securing women’s right to vote all across The United States. #tennesseewomen #suffragettes #righttovote #tennesseehistory #maggiemayfashions #chattanoogahistory #womenshistorymonth
Continuing our celebration of #womenshistorymonth Continuing our celebration of #womenshistorymonth we honor the matriarchs of the Blues. From the streets of Tennessee to the blues halls of Chicago, Empress Bessie Smith, Lizzie “Memphis Minnie” Douglas, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe all have similar stories. Growing up in the American South at the dawn of the 20th century, these ladies found from an early age music to be an expression of collective experience and melodies of their souls. Singing on the streets as children to earn money for their families, both Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie would go on to become powerhouses in the musical genre. Sister Rosetta Tharpe took her messages of hope and resilience into the streets, speakeasies, and performance halls around the world with her ground breaking rhythm and blues Gospel style. These are just a few of the women who used their voices to change the world forever. #empressoftheblues #motherofrhythm #gospelmusic #influencialwomen #bessiesmith #bluesmusic #maggiemayfashions #calicoball

“You must come to terms with the reality that no “You must come to terms with the reality that nothing outside ourselves, be it people or things is actually responsible for our happiness.” -Dr. Mary Walker

The only woman ever to be awarded the Medal of Honor for her courageous acts of valor during The American Civil War, Dr. Mary Walker broke gender barriers with her modified skirt and trouser combination (later referred to as reform dress). Here Dr. Walker is photographed post war in full men’s attire. #liveyourtruth #civilwarwomen #equality #dressreform #19thcenturyfashion #womensequality #civilwarhistory #maggiemayfashions #internationalwomensday #womenshistorymonth

Frances “Fannie” Wright was an intelligent and Frances “Fannie” Wright was an intelligent and outspoken early 19th century activist who dreamed of a society where ALL people could live and work together harmoniously regardless of race, gender, or class. Inspired by Robert Owen and his New Harmony Community and befriended by Thomas Jefferson, Wright began her own Utopian society right here in Tennessee. While Nashoba never gained ground, her “radical” ideas of equality, freedom, and feminism laid the foundation for generations to come. March is National Women’s History Month and we will be celebrating in fine style! Join us all month long as we meet a variety of ladies whose names deserve to be known! You can read more about Fannie, her Turkish trousers, and her Utopian Society on our Website under Calico Ball- Vignettes.
